Pastor’s Desk

Spring is one of my favorite seasons because of all the new things that each day seem to appear in nature. After a long and cold winter, it is a joy to see new life, especially in places that seemed so dead. It’s appropriate that Easter also takes place in the Spring because the symbolism follows the same path. The message portrayed is that of our Lord bringing life out of places of death.

Now most of us think of Easter only in terms of what life might be like “some day” when we die and go to heaven. But the Easter story relates to this life even more. Christ is saying to each of us that he is able to bring about victory in places we often write off as defeat. And with that in mind, I wonder how many of you reading this today need to consider what Easter says to you? Is there a place right now where you want to give up on someone or something? Is there a place right now that seems dead in terms of its future? Is there a place where you feel defeated? If you are honest with yourself, I am sure you can say yes to one of those categories. I know I can!

But this is where the power of the Gospel touches each one of us, especially when we yield those places of defeat to God and his purpose. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I felt like I was hitting a dead end, or a blank wall, or the end. And it was in those places that I said: OK Lord, I am powerless over this issue and thus I lift it up to you and your plan for the future. And lo and behold something began to change. Now I can’t say that I always liked what God was doing in that situation, but I can tell you this: He made things happen I never dreamt possible.

And so in this blessed season, I challenge each of you to consider what God is trying to tell you in regard to the Easter faith. What is it that you need to yield to him? Where is it that he wants to bring about a new beginning? And how open are you to allow him to do that?
